Abstract

First, the students will research their element using the Internet. Second, the students will write a script for their commercial. Third, students will video tape their commercial. Fourth, students will transfer their commercial to Movie Maker and produce a movie to present to the class.

Big Idea(s)

1. Identify elements with similar chemical and physical properties using the periodic table.

2. Recognize that an element always contains the same number of protons.

3. List the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons for any given ion or isotope.

Essential Questions

What are the physcial and chemical characteristics of my element?

What elements are similar to my element?

What elements are different from my element?

How amny protons, neutrons, and electrons are in my element?

Where can I fin my element?

What objects contain my element?

Learning Objectives

1. Identify elements with similar chemical and physical properties using the periodic table.

2. Recognize that an element always contains the same number of protons.

3. List the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons for any given ion or isotope.

Summative Assessment

The students will make a movie for their Element Infomercial Commercial including information that they were asked to research.

Lesson Opening

The students will watch examples of Element Infomercials  produced by other classes/schools. Each student will be given an element. Students will then recieve a worksheet on how to find information on the periodic table. The worksheet will also have students list the number of protons, neutrons, electrons and the atomic mass of a variety of elements.

Lesson Opening Co-teaching Plan

While the general education teacher goes over the content and performs exampls on the board, the co-teacher will walk around clarifying any questiosn the students may have. The attendance will also be completed at this time.

Exploration

The general education teacher and co-teacher will take the students to the computer lab. Students will research their element using the Internet and other informational resources. The students will be given a few very useful websites. Students will put their research they find on their element on a worksheet that was given to them in class.

Exploration Co-teaching Plan

Both the general educatio nteacher and co-teacher will be waling around assisting students in finding research on their element.

Check for Understanding

The students will be a given a short element/Periodic table quiz. Both teachers will look over their worksheets students wrote their information to see if hte stduents understood the assignment and to make sure the students included the correct research for their element.

Check for Understanding Co-teaching Plan

Both the general education teacher and the co-teacher will walk around and monitor students while they are taking the quiz. Then the general education teacehr and co-teacher will sit down together to look over the research students completed to make sure they were on the correct path.

Explanation

This will occur during the PowerPoint presentation, note taking, examples of other infomercials.

Explanation Co-teaching Plan

As the general education teacher is explaining the PowerPoint presentation, the co-teacher will walk around making sure everyone is staying on task with their notes. Then the general education teacher will play the example video. Any questions that stduents have on the upcoming project will be answered by both the general education teacher and the co-teacher.

Check for Understanding (2)

Both the general education teacher and co-teacher will check for understanding by watching the students present their Element Infomercial Commercial, produced in Movie Maker,  to the class.

Check for Understanding Co-teaching Plan (2)

Both the general education teacher and co-teacher will check for understanding by watching the students present their Element Infomercial Commercial, produced in Movie Maker,  to the class.

Extended Practice

The students will make flash cards on elements on the periodic table.

Closing

As the students watch their classmates presentations they will have to write three facts they learned from each presentation. They will then have to compare their element to two other elements. This will cover the following objective: Identify elements wil similar chemical and physical characteristics using the periodic table. This will also show the teachers if students are familiar wiht the characteristics of elements on the periodic table.

Closing Co-teach Plan

THe co-teacher will monitor the students as they watch the presentations and answer any questions they may have during the presentations.
